Nigeria and other African Countries, that should rightly bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, will have ,Big spending, China to contend with according to Segun Odegbami.
His comments come on the heels of Tuesday’s decision by the FIFA Council to approve a 48-team World Cup from 2026 and FIFA President, Gianni Infantino’s pledge to support a co-host bid.
Odegbami, a long time advocate of a West Africa World Cup bid, implored regional countries on the continent to consider putting up a bid but also admits the ‘heavy investment’ by China over the past years will pose a huge challenge to Africa in 2030.
Odegbami told footballlive.ng, that ‘ By 2030 it’ll be Africa’s turn again, but China also are eyeing that year; that’s why they have been investing heavily in developing their domestic football by importing some of the best players in world football into their league.’
He further argued that the idea of a single bid by a third-world country would be stupid.
” There are some countries that can but it’ll be stupid for any one Country to go it alone.”
‘ So the idea is that, several countries that are not far from each other, that will be well integrated, socially and economically as a result should go and put forth an application to host.’
