Spain Announce Lopetegui Replacement

Date:

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed that former national team captain Fernando Hierro will take charge of La Furia Roja for the duration of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The RFEF sacked Julen Lopetegui just one day before the showpiece in Russia starts, following his agreement to take charge of Real Madrid from next month.

The 50-year-old, who made 89 appearances for Spain as a player, will take his first training session with the 2010 champions on Thursday afternoon.

The former Los Blancos captain has one season of managerial experience to his name, having coached La Liga side Real Oviedo in the 2016/17 campaign, but he left the club a year ago following a mid-table finish.

Hierro will make his debut as Spain’s manager on Friday, when the Spaniards take on 2016 European champions Portugal in Group B.
