Former assistant coach of Sporting Lagos, Micah Bello has highlighted that the Nigerian sporting ecosystem lacks a structure. He explained that the nation the lack of a basic structure is what is now affecting the athletes’ performance, referring to the last Olympics.
The gaffer further insighted that Nigeria used to cut corners to some of their successes in days past, but the advent of technology and science has limited that possibility in today’s world.
“In life everybody has growth, right? But what you get to achieve in life is determined by systems you’ve put in place. So, we have been able to cut corners in the past and still achieve success, but you have nations now that are putting their almost built in preparation and also, we have science now being involved in sports”, Bello said.
He added that a lack of proper preparation will hinder performance on competition front, and this all comes down to the structural anomaly in the sporting sector of the nation.
“There is no way you’re not preparing as your competitors and you get to be able to perform at their level when the competition comes. And I think the lack of proper structure within our sport ecosystem is beginning to show in our athletes’ performance”, he added.
