In contrast with initial speculation that the female national team, Super Falcons would face South Africa in another clash at the ongoing Cyprus International Women Cup, officials of the squad have confirmed that the game on Wednesday is actually against Thailand.
Footballlive.ng gathered that excitement and apprehension had already started running through the Falcons’ camp, following initial reports and permutations in Cyprus that they could be heading for a third clash with Banyana Banyana sin the spate of three months.
Both sides met in the group stage of the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations, with Banyana Banyana shocking the Falcons 1-0, before then got a rematch in the final, during which Asisat Oshoala lost a penalty that could have given the champions victory during regulation time, and they could only eke out another triumph via penalties.
Those results in Accra, Ghana set the tone of apprehension over vast improvements in South Africa’s squad, in contrast with apparent declining fortunes for the Nigerians, such that a face-off between both sides in Cyprus would have been one interesting clash to behold.
However, that will not be the case, as Falcons officials took to Twitter on Tuesday to clarify the fixture schedule in Lanaca, Cyprus, and stated clearly that the match on Wednesday is against Thailand.
A trio of tweets by the team read: “FT: @NGSuper_Falcons 0-1 #Belgium – Elena Dhont’s solitary effort condemned the Africans to a second group stage at the Cyprus Cup at the GSK Stadium on Monday.
“The @NGSuper_Falcons finished third in Group C with three points from three games.
“We will take on Thailand in the seventh-place final on March 6 at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca, Cyprus
“On Wednesday, March 6 – South Africa face Finland at 11:00h for 9th/10th place; Nigeria battle Thailand at 15:00h for 7th/8th place.”
