Nigeria Grab Win To Start Interim Coach’s Tenure

Date:

In a highly anticipated international showdown, Nigeria secured a historic 2-1 victory over Ghana, marking their first win against their rivals since 2006 in a thrilling encounter filled with drama and excitement.

This was both Nigeria and Ghana’s first football game after the AFCON, and it was a first under new management as Interim Coach Finidi George had taken over the super eagles since Jose Peseiro left.

And Ghana reappointed Otto Addo to take over the black stars after the continental showdown as well.

The match began with both teams showcasing their intent, but it was Nigeria who drew first blood in the 38th minute when Cyril Dessers coolly converted from the penalty spot, giving his side a crucial lead and setting the stage for a gripping contest.

Ghana’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a significant blow in the 56th minute when Jerome Opoku was shown a red card for violent conduct, reducing Ghana to ten men and tilting the momentum further in Nigeria’s favor.

Nigeria capitalized on their numerical advantage and extended their lead in the 84th minute when Ademola Lookman found the back of the net, courtesy of a well-timed assist from Alex Iwobi, putting Nigeria in a commanding position.

However, Ghana refused to go down without a fight and managed to pull one back in the dying moments of the game when Jordan Ayew converted a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time, setting up a nervy finish.

Nigeria now turn their focus to another friendly, as they take on the eagles of Mali on Tuesday in Marrakech.
