NNL Sanctions Gateway United FC for Breaching Security Rules

Date:

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has taken stringent action against Gateway United Football Club of Abeokuta for contravening the league’s security regulations. Following a violent incident involving the team’s supporters attacking the centre referee after their goalless draw against Ikorodu City on April 13, the NNL has ordered Gateway United to relocate to Benin, Edo State, for the remainder of the season.

As part of the disciplinary measures, Gateway United will now host their upcoming matches against Crown FC and Osun United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin. This move aims to ensure the safety and security of match officials and other stakeholders involved in the games.

Additionally, the club has been fined N1 million by the NNL for the breach of security protocols. Furthermore, Gateway United is required to cover the medical expenses amounting to N100,000 for the treatment of the injured referees.

Dr. Ayo Abdulrahaman, the Chief Operating Officer of the NNL, emphasized the seriousness of the incident and stated that Gateway United must identify and take legal action against the fans responsible for attacking the referee. Failure to comply with this directive could result in additional sanctions against the club.

In the current NNL Conference B standings, Ikorodu City leads the table with 27 points, while Gateway United occupies the fifth position with 23 points. The league remains committed to maintaining the integrity of the competition and ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
