Cape Verde have finally claimed their first win in an AFCON knockout game, in what was their third attempt.
Cape Verde had previously lost to Ghana in the 2013 quarterfinal and to Senegal in the round of 16 in 2021.
Ryan Mendes made it a third time lucky for the Portuguese-speaking nation as they beat Mauritania courtesy of an 88th-minute penalty.
It was a game of close calls with 29 attempts between both teams, although all four shots on target belonged to Cape Verde. It all came down to a penalty right at the end of the game, when Ryan Mendes sent his shot straight down the middle.
Cape Verde have now won their first knockout game in AFCON history and now await a tough test in either Morrocco or South Africa.
