Who Will Save Francis Uzoho?

Date:

Francis Uzoho didn’t have much to do on the night when Nigeria faced Saudi Arabia in an international friendly match at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão, but the Super Eagles first choice left many with a lot of doubts.

Uzoho shipped in two goals on the night, against an uninspiring Saudi Arabia team.

The first was a howler; typical school boy error for any goalkeeper at this level of international football.

He palmed in a floating cross, from Salman Al-Faraj’s (60′) lofted cross, into his own net to the dismay of captain Wilfred Ndidi who looked daggers at the goalkeeper as he sprawled on the green.

All night the Cyprus-based goalie was an on-looker, having only to make occasional calls in the game, because the Saudi players were kept at bay and threatened little in the opposition half.

Eventually, Nigeria turned the game around with goals from Abdulelah Al-Amri’s Own goal(73′) and Kelechi Iheanacho (81′), but all that hard work was undone when the opponents grabbed a stoppage time leveler.

A deflected Mohamed Kanno free-kick (90+10′) beat the 24 year-old for Saudi Arabia to snatch a late equalizer and leave the goalkeeper, surely, utterly disappointed with his performance.

Nigeria has three more games to play before next year’s Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The team’s first choice goalkeeper is yet to make a competitive appearance at club level for Nikosia this season and his show tonight could just throw the field wild open for a replacement in goal, should Jose Peseiro consider it necessary for Nigeria’s AFCON title charge.
