Galatasaray of Turkey striker, Henry Onyekuru is seeking compensation for the club’s fans that flew to Portugal to support the team against FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League, but returned home sad.
Onyekuru said it hurt him seeing Galatasaray’s large array of supporters defy all odds and distance to join the squad for the away fixture, only for the team to lose 1-0 at Estadio do Dragao in Oporto.
Footballlive.ng recalls that The Lions conceded their first defeat in the Champions League this campaign after Moussa Marega’s 49th-minute header separated both sides on Wednesday.
Onyekuru was in action for the full duration and had a chance to fire the Turk Telekom Stadium outfit ahead in the 39th minute but could not find the back of the net with his shot.
As a result of suffering defeat in their second Group D outing, Gala fell to third place in the standings, behind FC Porto and Schalke 04 of Germany, with three points from two games.
However, while thanking their fans for sticking with them, Onyekuru said he and his colleagues will aim to pick up maximum points when they visit Antalyaspor in Saturday’s Turkish Super Lig fixture.
Onyekuru said it would be a form of compensation for the fans to see Galatasaray return to winning ways, after their loss to Porto, adding that the Istanbul-based club will bounce back on the continent as well.
The 21-year-old former KAS Eupen and RSC Anderlecht of Belgium attacker, who is on loan from Everton of England, thanked the fans that travelled to support the team and assured them of better results in subsequent matches of the Turkish champions.
Onyekuru stated: “Thank you to the traveling supporters that made the journey. It was a close game, but unfortunate result. We will bounce back.”
