Trabzonspor Super Lig match Abandoned as Opponents Walk-off in Protest

Date:

Turkish Super Lig side, Istanbulspor made a dramatic protest during their League clash against Trabzonspor by walking off the field after a contentious refereeing decision.

The Trabzonspor vs Istanbulspor match resumed following a one-week suspension initiated after a club president assaulted a referee.

Istanbulspor trailed 2-1 with Paul Onuachu scoring for the hosts, but the game was then disrupted following a disputed penalty claim by the hosts after an altercation between Florian Loshaj and Batista Mendy, resulting in Loshaj’s fall.

Players of Istanbulspor were instructed to leave the pitch by the Club chairman, Ecmel Faik Sarialioglu, halting the game in the 74th minute.

Trabzonspor coach, Abdullah Avci expressed disappointment, labeling it a regrettable event for football and awaiting the decision of the football federation.

It was only the League’s first day back following the suspension triggered by the president of Ankaragucu, Faruk Koca, physically assaulting a referee during a match.

As a consequence, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) permanently banned Koca, who was subsequently arrested.

Additionally, the TFF mandated a two-million-lira ($69,000) fine on Ankaragucu, along with a directive for the team to play five home games without spectators due to the unrest involving fans and club officials.
