Following the drama in Enugu on Sunday, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has penalized Enyimba and Rangers International for breaching its framework due to misconduct during the Match Day 35 fixture.
The Oriental Derby, held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, saw an unprecedented turnout of fans. However, the game was abandoned after a controversial penalty was awarded to the home team, Rangers International, in the dying minutes.
The league governing body on Monday awarded three points and three goals to Rangers International and fined Enyimba FC ten million naira (₦10m) for breaching the league’s framework.
Additionally, Rangers International will pay a fine of five million naira (₦5m) for various offenses, including inadequate security provision, pitch encroachment by fans and unauthorized persons, and selling tickets beyond the stadium’s capacity, which led to the encroachment. Both clubs have been given 48 hours to appeal the decision.
With this ruling, Rangers International remains at the top of the league table with 64 points from 35 matches.
