Thomas Müller has announced his retirement from Germany’s national team after their exit from Euro 2024, ending his international career with 131 caps and 45 goals.
The Bayern Munich forward is the third most-capped player for Germany’s men’s team, following Miroslav Klose and Lothar Matthäus.
In a farewell video, Müller said “It always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together. When I had the privilege of making my first international appearance, I would never have dreamed of all this. I would like to say thank you to all the fans and my Germany teammates for their support over the years. Take the enthusiasm and joy of this year’s Euros with you.”
Thomas Müller debuted for Germany in 2010 against Argentina and quickly made his mark in the 2010 World Cup, winning the Golden Boot with five goals and three assists.
His standout moment came in the 2014 World Cup, where he scored a hat trick against Portugal and played a key role in Germany’s 7-1 victory over Brazil in the semifinals and their 1-0 win over Argentina in the final.
Germany’s quarterfinal defeat to Spain in Euro 2024 was Müller’s last appearance. His retirement means Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann will need to fill the void left by another veteran, following Toni Kroos’ retirement from all football after the same tournament.
The future of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who is Germany’s fifth most-capped player with 124 appearances, also remains uncertain.
