Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim believes his side is finding life easier in the Europa League compared to the Premier League due to the slower tempo and reduced physicality of continental football.
Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League quarterfinal first leg against Lyon, Amorim offered a candid analysis of the contrast in his team’s performances across competitions.
Since taking charge in November, the Red Devils have gone unbeaten in Europe, winning five and drawing one of their six matches.
In stark contrast, they’ve managed only six wins in 20 Premier League games, leaving them stranded in 13th place on the domestic table.

“One More Second to Think” Makes All the Difference
“I truly believe it’s the pace and physicality of the game,” Amorim explained.
“In the Premier League, you have less time and space. But in the Europa League, even one more second with the ball changes everything.”
“Until now I felt a difference when we play Europa League and when we play any Premier League game. That small space of time can give us an advantage to play better.”
Amorim insisted the issue isn’t tactical but environmental, pointing out that the Premier League’s intensity demands faster decision-making under greater pressure.
“We have the best league in the world, but there is less time to think in it.”
Silverware and UCL on the Line
Despite their league struggles, United still have a shot at salvaging their season in Europe. Amorim explained the importance of lifting a European title, not just for morale but also for long-term planning.
“It’s really important in all aspects — to win a title, especially a European one. Then there’s the Champions League qualification, the budget for the summer… Everything is connected with this competition.”
Injury Updates: Mainoo Returns, De Ligt Still Out
Amorim will welcome back teenage midfield star Kobbie Mainoo, who has traveled to France after a two-month injury layoff.
Luke Shaw, who was part of the squad for the Manchester derby draw, is also available.
However, Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined with a foot injury.
“Mattha has a problem in his foot,” Amorim confirmed. “We’re trying to assess. We still don’t have the data that he can return.”
