Super Eagles forward, Taiwo Awoniyi has delivered a strong and unapologetic message to his suitors across Europe: he’s not leaving the Premier League anytime soon.
The 27-year-old striker, currently on the books of Nottingham Forest, has been at the center of transfer speculation in recent weeks amid reduced playing time and growing interest from clubs in Spain and other European leagues.
However, in an interview with Humble Boots, Awoniyi made it clear that his heart — and future — remain in England.
Premier League or Nothing for Taiwo Awoniyi
“For me, it’s always the Premier League. My family, agent, everyone knows it’s always the Premier League,” Awoniyi stated emphatically.
The statement is a firm rejection of outside advances, especially as the Nigerian forward admitted to receiving messages from clubs pitching projects in La Liga — offers that he says he doesn’t even entertain.
“Sometimes I block them immediately because it’s not my conversation,” he said.
Awoniyi’s clarity and decisiveness are rare in a football world where transfer negotiations often linger in vague speculation.
Struggles, Setbacks, and a Statement of Intent
Since his move to Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, Awoniyi has experienced both highs and lows.
He played a critical role in the club’s Premier League survival last season, scoring six goals in the final four games to help secure top-flight safety.
But this season, he has been hampered by injuries and the resurgence of New Zealand international Chris Wood, who has taken over the main striker role with consistent scoring form. Awoniyi has managed just two goals in 31 appearances, a disappointing return for a player of his quality.
Still, the Nigerian is not throwing in the towel. He remains under contract at Forest until 2027 and appears determined to fight for his place in the Premier League.
“I know when I will tell myself, ‘Thank you, Premier League.’ So, I still have two more years with Nottingham Forest — thank God for that.”
Transfer Rumours Intensify, But Awoniyi Remains Unmoved
With Forest expected to make squad changes this summer, especially after narrowly avoiding relegation again, Awoniyi had emerged as a potential exit candidate. Spanish clubs and others reportedly tested the waters with inquiries — but those efforts now seem futile.
While some players flirt with other leagues in search of new adventures, Awoniyi is standing firm.
What Next for Taiwo Awoniyi?
Though he may be a fringe figure at Forest right now, Awoniyi’s passion for the Premier League and his willingness to outwork the competition could yet see a resurgence next season — whether at Forest or another English side.
A consistent run of fitness and form could also put him back in contention for a starring role in Nigeria’s upcoming AFCON 2025 campaign or 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where his experience and physicality remain valuable assets.
“England is home,” he says. And for now, that’s where he’s staying.
