Senegal Crash Out Of World Cup, Colombia Advance…Japan Advance Via Fair Play Rule, Despite Loss

Africa will have no representatives in the knockout stages at the 2018 World Cup after Senegal lost 1-0 to Colombia to finish third in Group H.

The game’s first real effort at at goal arrived after 12 minutes, with Colombia’s Quintero forcing goalkeeper Khadim N’Diaye into fine save with a curling free-kick.

Senegal looked to have earned themselves a penalty when the referee pointed to the spot after Sadio Mane went down under the challenge of Davidson Sanchez.

However Colombia remained resolute at the back to secure the win and a spot in the Last 16, while Senegal are eliminated.

With Japan and Senegal posting an identical goal-difference and goal scored, the latter progressed via the Fair Play rule, having accumulated less yellow cards than the African nation.

Japan advanced to the round of the 16 at the 2018 World Cup, despite losing to Poland in their final Group H clash on Thursday.

The Japanese showed promise in the early stages of the encounter, with Shinji Okazaki and Yoshinori Muto going close in the opening 15 minutes.

Poland squandered a big chance to double their lead on 74 minutes when Grosicki picked out Robert Lewandowski, who fired over the crossbar from close range.

Nevertheless, the Japan were unable to find an equaliser in the closing stages as Poland held on for the win.

Despite the loss, Japan still progressed to the next round on the fair play rule, having accumulated less yellow cards than Senegal, who boasted an identical goal-difference and goals score record.
