Abia Comets, a Nigeria National League (NNL) team, have announced the release of 21 players in a bid to restructure the squad for improved performance in the upcoming season. The decision was confirmed by the club’s chairman, Boniface Uche, who clarified the rationale behind this significant change.
Uche emphasized that the players who were let go had either reached the end of their contracts or were on loan. He reassured the media that the club is not in debt to any players or staff, stating, “I want to be quoted anywhere, Abia Comets is not owing any player nor staff. Everyone has been paid as at when due.”
He further explained, “We didn’t sack any of our staff, unless those whose contracts elapsed with the season. As we prepare for the new season, those of them that their services will be needed, will be recalled.”
Uche also mentioned plans to bring in higher-quality players to strengthen the team ahead of the new season, indicating a strategic approach to ensure better performance in future competitions.
