Rotherham United of England defender, Semi Ajayi has acknowledged that he will need to keep working hard at his club in order to get more invitations to the Super Eagles.
After getting his senior national team debut against Seychelles in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles, Ajayi admitted he was happy and honoured, but quickly noted that he must work harder to justify future invitations.
The towering defender, who was part of the Flying Eagles’ squad to the 2013 Toulon Invitational Tournament in France, said he is excited with the beginning of his full international career and wants to make the best of it for the long term.
Though he has played as a central defender and defensive midfielder this season with his club, Ajayi operated as a right back for the Eagles on Saturday, but says he is ready to make more sacrifices for the country.
Ajayi concluded that the only way to get invitations for upcoming games is to continue doing well at his English Championship club.
He declared: “As long as I keep performing for my club and keep performing when I am called upon by the coach here, I hope to make many more appearances for Nigeria.
”It was an honour to be called up, honour to get the chance to make my debut, I am very happy, it is a very proud day for me.
“I thought I did quite well and we got a good result so it is all positive. Three points is always important, so we need to continue picking up wins.”
