Plateau United of Jos goalkeeper, Dele Ajiboye has given thanks to Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode for redeeming a pledge of N20m he made to the home-based Eagles for winning silver at this year’s Championship of African Nations (CHAN 2018) in Morocco.
Though it took four months for Governor Ambode to redeem his pledge, Ajiboye, who represented the team at the presentation ceremony in Lagos, said the gesture will further encourage Nigerian players to give their best during national team assignments.
Lagos State Sports Commission chairman, Dr Kweku Adedayo Tandoh, in company of the director general, Hon Babatunde Bank-Anthony, presented the N20m cheque to the team on behalf of the governor.
“On behalf of the team, I want to thank and appreciate Governor Ambode for this kind gesture, this will go a long way to support the team,” Ajiboye said.
Tandoh recalled that Ambode made the pledge of N20m to the Eagles who was impressed with the outing of the Nigerian team at the 2018 CHAN.
“The Governor is redeeming his pledge to help the players and officials of the team who did the country proud at the 5th African Nations Championships in Morocco. I’m so glad that the team are receiving the cheque,” Tandoh said.
Also present at the ceremony was first vice-president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi, who assured that the money will go to all who worked for it.
Akinwunmi, who first collected the cheque and immediately presented in to Ajiboye, said it was due reward for the team that placed second in the prestige competition designed by Confederation of African Football (CAF) for home-based players across the continent.
