Chippa United of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has been recognised as the only player from the Rainbow Nation’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) that is set to play at this year’s World Cup in Russia.
Following Akpeyi’s inclusion in Nigeria’s final squad list to Russia 2018, and acquisition of jersey number 13 for the competition, his club have reeled out information identifying him as the only player to carry the South African league’s banner at this year’s Mundial.
However, as the Eagles line out against Croatia, Iceland and Argentina, Akpeyi may not be Nigeria’s number one in goal, as he is now rated behind Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Francis Odinaka Uzoho.
Before now, Akpeyi made only one appearance for the Eagles during the qualifiers, but Chippa United still felt duty bound to honour him, and stated as much on social media.
In their post, the Absa Premiership club acknowledged that Akpeyi is the only player from the South African top-flight league that will participate at the 2018 World Cup.
“CUFC shotstopper, Daniel Akpeyi, has been named in the Official 23-man World Cup Squad. He is the only PSL player participating in the 2018 World Cup. #RussiaWorldCup #PrideOfTheEasternCape,” Chippa stated.
