Alex Iwobi and Bassey’s Fulham Knocked Out of Carabao Cup

Date:

Fulham suffered a heartbreaking defeat to lower-division club Preston North End in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, losing 16-15 in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Alex Iwobi was brought on with 13 minutes remaining, while Calvin Bassey remained on bench an unused substitute.

Fulham saw Jorge Cuenca and Timothy Castagne miss their spot-kicks, allowing Preston to secure the upset.

Preston took the lead in the 35th minute through Ryan Ledson, but Fulham responded in the 61st minute with Reiss Nelson’s equalizer. However, Fulham’s hopes of advancing were dashed in the marathon shootout.

Meanwhile, at Goodison Park, Joe Aribo’s Southampton edged Everton on penalties (6-5) after a 1-1 draw.

Aribo successfully converted his penalty, while Ashley Young’s miss allowed James Bree to send the Saints through to the next round.

The biggest victory of the night came at Old Trafford, where Manchester United crushed Barnsley 7-0, with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Christian Eriksen each scoring two goals, and Antony adding another.
