The English second division is rapidly closing out for the season, and Southampton are fighting for a place to play in the premier league once again. But a 2-1 loss at home against Hull City would only dent such ambitions.
A battle of 4th against 6th it was, but it was 6th placed Hull City who came out on top, edging their counterparts in an exciting encounter.
In a game of two contrasting halves, Hull City overwhelmed Southampton in the first half and will get results in the first 45. Hull City’s first half performance produced 11 shots, with 4 of them on target. The visitors got two goals courtesy of Anass Zaroury in the 11th minute and Liverpool loanee, Fabio Carvalho in the 36th minute.
Southampton came alive in the second half, mustering out 12 shots, but only 2 on target. Nigerian midfielder, Joe Aribo ensured to convert one of the shots in the 88th minute. But the goal would only be a consolation as Hull City hung on for all three points.
Southampton are 4th with 67 points as they prepare to take on Milwall at the St Mary’s stadium.
Hull City on the other hand are 6th with 54 points. They will host West Bromwich Albion at home on the 24th of February.
