Arsenal celebrates Iwobi’s rise

Date:

Arsenal FC today is celebrating Super Eagles winger Alex Iwobi on the occasion of the third year anniversary of his first start for the gunners.

Iwobi joined the Arsenal football academy when he was in primary school, graduating through the ranks at all junior levels before former coach Arsene Wenger drafted him into the first team where he started in a League Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday in a round 16 fixture with the gunners losing 3 – 0.

Iwobi who is the nephew of former Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha scored his first league goal against Everton and another one against Watford playing a total of 13 premier league games and scoring 2 goals in the 2015/2016 league season.

Since his first start on October 27, 2015, Iwobi has gone on to score a total of 9 goals in all competitions for the gunners in 79 appearances.

Arsenal on its official handle on Twitter has taken the day out to celebrate the skillful 22 year old star in a series of funny tweets and videos to remind him of his humble beginnings. “#OnThisDay in 2015, Alex Iwobi makes his first senior debut. Nowadays he is the #BIG17 but back then he was the BIG45.”

The club also uploaded a 59 second video of Iwobi’s journey at the club with a picture of the day he signed in as a youngster and tagged the tweet, “We love our #Naijaboy and he is one of our own.”

Iwobi has been in superb form this season with the gunners and will be hoping to continue when Crystal Palace visits the Emirates on Sunday in an EPL fixture.
