Asisat Oshoala Joins the New NWSL Club and Explains Reasons for Leaving Barcelona

Date:

Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala has finalized a move from Barcelona Femeni to the American side Bay FC, the club has officially announced.

The former Arsenal and Liverpool player opted to switch from the Catalan giants to the Californian club, signing a contract with Bay FC until 2026 with an option for an additional season. Oshoala bids farewell to Barca after a five-year tenure, initially joining the club on loan in January 2019.

In her interview with the Attacking Third podcast, the 29-year-old elucidated her choice to depart Spain for the United States, stating: “I stayed five years in Barcelona, and that’s the longest I’ve stayed in a club, to be honest. I feel I just want to change; I want to try something different. I just want to have fun, and when I was presented with the project of this club, I liked it, so I decided to go for it.”

During her time with Barcelona, Oshoala secured two Women’s Champions League titles and one Liga F crown. She also clinched the African Women’s Footballer of the Year title six times. Departing the club with a noteworthy record, she notched six goals in nine league matches this season, along with one goal in two Champions League games.

Bay FC, established in April 2023, is set to commence its inaugural National Women’s Soccer League campaign this year. The upcoming NWSL season commences in March, with Bay FC slated to face fellow Californian side Angel City FC in their debut match.
