FC Porto of Portugal defender, Chidozie Awaziem will on Monday join other top players across Europe to eagerly and anxiously await the outcome of the UEFA Champions League draw in Nyon, Switzerland.
Footballlive.ng reports that Awziem is the only current Super Eagles’ player left in the race for Europe’s elite clubs’ prestigious soccer prize, which will make him the standout Nigerian player this week.
After getting another lift to his career by playing as an 81st minute substitute in his side’s 3-2 win against Galatasaray last Tuesday, which confirmed Porto’s place in the knock-out stage draw, Awaziem will now hope for another lift from the pots.
Porto enter the draw with memories of how they were European champions in 1997 and 2004, such that high hopes will be heled by their fans of a favourable draw on Monday that can take them back to those glory days.
As fate would have it, Awaziem’s team finished top of their group, which puts them in Pot 1 for the draw, but it is left to be seen if they will pool a ‘smaller’ side, considering that some big teams finished second in the first round.
Nonetheless, Awaziem was optimistic, as he stated on social media: “Can’t wait to see the outcome of the UCL draw on Monday. Porto for life..”
