Awoniyi Closing in on Mo Salah’s Goal Record

Date:

Taiwo Awoniyi, was once again on target in Nottingham Forest’s 2-1 home win against Sheffield United in their second league game of the campaign.

Forest couldn’t have asked for a more ideal beginning, as they secured an early lead within the first three minutes of the match.

The opposing Blades struggled to clear the ball under the intense pressing from Forest’s players, and Serge Aurier delivered a precise cross that found Taiwo Awoniyi’s head.

The Nigerian out-jumped the defense and executed a strong header, sending the ball into the net.

It marked his sixth consecutive Premier League game with a goal, showcasing an impressive scoring form.

Similar to the first, the second session got off to a quick start with a goal after three minutes.

Gustavo Hamer scored the equalizer this time for the opposition with a beautiful curling strike from the edge of the area to level things up in the game.

Meanwhile, Awoniyi thought he had given Nottingham Forest the lead when he found the net once again, deftly lifting the ball over Foderingham.

However, the goal was swiftly disallowed as he was caught in an offside position.

The Forward was replaced in the 84th minute of the game by former Newcastle United man, Chris Wood, who would go on to score the winner on the stroke of full time.

As the match seemed to be heading towards a draw, Aurier delivered another enticing cross into the Sheffield United box.

This time, it was Awoniyi’s replacement who rose and headed the ball into the net, securing a late victory for Steve Cooper’s side.

For Taiwo Awoniyi, his goal scoring run in six consecutive Premier League appearances is now the longest of any Nigerian player, and is surpassed by only two African players in the competition’s history – Mohamed Salah and Emmanuel Adebayor (seven-game runs).
