Former international Emmanuel Babayaro has defended Daniel Amokachi’s decision to reject what he described as “demeaning terms” for the position of Super Eagles assistant coach.
Amokachi was appointed as an assistant to Super Eagles head coach Finidi George in May.
However, he has not joined the team in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.
Babayaro revealed that Amokachi declined the role after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) recently presented him with conditions including no salary and a role dependent entirely on the head coach’s discretion.
“How demeaning can these conditions be?” Babayaro wrote on social media.
“Amokachi said yes to the appointment as the Super Eagles assistant coach but an emphatic no to the demeaning conditions attached thereto.
And yes, the conditions were only just communicated recently.”
The former Chelsea player urged the public to stop criticizing Amokachi without knowing the full details and also pleaded with the public to allow the national team to concentrate on their game against South Africa tomorrow, as unnecessary distractions are detrimental.
