South Africa’s national team have stepped up their efforts to get another victory in the Afirca Cup of Nations qualifier, and put distance between them and Nigeria, who Bafana Bafana beat at their backyard in Uyo.
Both countries enter the second round of action in the race to AFCON 2019 with varying fortunes, as Bafana play at home against second placed Libya, while Nigeria’s Super Eagles visit bottom side Seychelles.
To show that they are ready to reach six points this weekend against Libya, who defeated Seychelles 5-1 on the opening day, Bafana beat South Africa Premier Soccer League side, AmaZulu 2-0 in a friendly match on Wednesday.
Goals from SuperSport United forward, Bradley Grobler and uncapped Orlando Pirates winger, Vincent Pule secured the win in two halves of 30 minutes each.
Bafana Bafana hope for victory against Libya at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday to put them in pole position for the finals in Cameroon next June.
They have already secured an excellent 2-0 away win over Nigeria in the pool last year, and will face minnows Seychelles in back-to-back fixtures next month.
However, just like Nigeria, the squad has been rocked by a number of injury withdrawals, with Lebo Mothiba (Starsbourg, France), Bongani Zungu (Amiens, France), Hlompho Kekana and Themba Zwane (both Mamelodi Sundowns) forced to sit out the fixture.
