Bayelsa Queens have reclaimed their place at the summit of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six playoffs following a confident 2-0 victory over Remo Stars Ladies on Monday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.
The 2022 champions were ruthless from the opening whistle, showing intent and urgency as they pushed to return to title contention after a slow start to the playoffs.
Chinwe Akabike set the tone with a 12th-minute opener, and Sefiat Zainab doubled the lead in the 25th minute — a two-goal salvo that stunned the home crowd and firmly established the Prosperity Girls’ ambitions.
With the win, Bayelsa Queens climbed to seven points from three games, edging ahead of the competition on goal difference.
Nasarawa Amazons Keep Pressure On with Win Over Rivers Angels
Nasarawa Amazons remain hot on Bayelsa’s heels after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over favourites Rivers Angels in the second match of the day.
NWFL Super Six leading scorer, Janet Akekeromowei continued her sensational form, netting a brace in the 24th and 30th minutes — taking her tally to four goals in the tournament.
Rivers Angels responded late through Catherine Kenneth in the 79th minute, setting up a tense finale, but the Amazons held on to notch their second win and match Bayelsa’s seven-point haul.
Title Hopes Over for Rivers Angels and Naija Ratels
The loss means Rivers Angels, five-time league champions and one of the tournament’s favourites, are officially out of the title race, managing just one point from three games.
Naija Ratels have also crashed out after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Edo Queens in the day’s opening fixture. Emem Essien struck twice in quick succession (20th and 22nd minutes) to seal Edo Queens’ first win of the playoffs and bring her personal tally to three goals.
Naija Ratels, who have now lost all three matches, are bottom of the playoff table with zero points and no mathematical route to the title.
Edo Queens Still in the Mix, But Face Tough Path
Reigning champions Edo Queens, who had stumbled in their opening two games (a 1-0 loss to Remo Stars and a 1-1 draw with Rivers Angels), now sit fourth with four points.
They must win both of their remaining fixtures — against Nasarawa Amazons and Bayelsa Queens — and hope other results go their way to retain a slim chance of defending their league crown.
Current Standings After Matchday 3:
-
Bayelsa Queens – 7 pts (3 games)
-
Nasarawa Amazons – 7 pts (3 games)
-
Remo Stars Ladies – 6 pts (3 games)
-

The NWFL Super Six continues this week in Ikenne, with the remaining two matchdays set to decide who will emerge as the 2024/25 Nigerian Women’s Football League champions and represent the country at the WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers in August.
Bayelsa Queens will look to stay perfect, Nasarawa Amazons are determined to spoil the party, and Edo Queens are plotting a late charge
