The Confederation of African Football CAF has granted Ghana permission to host their next Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium.
This decision comes after the Ghana Football Association GFA struggled to secure an alternative venue outside of the country.
Initially, Ghana considered playing their home matches in Nigeria, following CAF’s withdrawal of approval for Kumasi’s Baba Yara Stadium in September.
The stadium failed to meet the required standards for international fixtures. Ghana also explored other options, including Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon’s Japoma Stadium in Douala, and the Berkane Municipal Stadium in Morocco.
The GFA reached out to the Togo Football Federation in an attempt to relocate their home game to Lomé, but negotiations fell through.
After extensive discussions, CAF has now given the green light for Ghana to hold their upcoming qualifier at Accra Sports Stadium.
However, CAF emphasized that it will continue to monitor the stadium’s readiness, not only for this match but for future CAF-sanctioned events as well.
