As the first leg of the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League approaches, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed a Ugandan official to oversee the match between Nigeria’s Remo Stars and Morocco’s ASFAR.
Remo Stars earned the right to represent Nigeria in the prestigious competition after finishing second in the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season. Similarly, ASFAR secured their spot by finishing second in the Moroccan League last season.
This upcoming clash will mark a rematch between the two teams, who previously faced off two years ago in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup. In that encounter, Remo Stars managed a surprising 1-1 draw away from home but suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat on their own turf. This time around, Remo Stars will play the first leg at home.
CAF has named Mashood Ssali of Uganda as the center referee for the match, which is set to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on August 18, 2024.
Remo Stars will be eager to seek revenge and capitalize on their increased experience. Meanwhile, ASFAR, currently undergoing a rebuild with 16 new players and a revamped coaching staff, will aim to find the right balance between cohesion and the fresh energy injected into their squad.
The match promises to be a fascinating contest, with both teams looking to exploit any weaknesses in their opponent’s game.
