Super Eagles midfielder Michael Babatunde was instrumental for his team Wydad Casablanca as they thrashed former CAF Champions League winner ASEC Mimosa of Cote d’Ivoire 5 – 2 in match day one of the CAF Champions’ League group stage to go top of Group which has been termed the group of death.
Babatunde Michael scored the second goal for the North African side in the 45th minute of the encounter just a minute after Wonlo Coullibaly had canceled out Wydad’s first goal which was scored by Ismail El Hadad in the 16th minute.
Wydad resumed the onslaught in the second half as they scored three goals in 24 minutes. Zouhair El Moutaraji scored the team’s second half opener in the 56th minute. Walid El Karti scored the team’s fourth goal in the 5th minute while Badie Aouk 80th minute finish sealed Wydad’s win before ASEC got another consolatory goal through Salif Bagate in the 85th minute.
Babatunde was given a starting place in the team as a false striker by Coach Faouzi Benzarti and rewarded the coach’s confidence with the team’s second goal.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup revelation and Wydad will continue their CAF Champions League campaign with a visit to South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday January 19 by 8pm.
