Female national team, Super Falcons skipper, Rita Chikwelu says the squad’s preparations for the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations are on course, footballlive.ng reports.
As the team enter the third week of their training programme towards AWCON 2018 in Ghana, Chikwelu stressed that everything is going well at their base in Epe, Lagos State.
The veteran defender said she and her colleagues are all working hard in training and reckons that they will be ready to retain their continental title later this month in Ghana.
Nigeria’s Falcons, who are defending champions and have been the most dominant team in the competition, with eight titles out of ten editions, start their campaign on November 18 against South Africa.
South Africa, Zambia and Kenya are all lined up to face Ghana’s Black Queens in preparation for the competition, but the Falcons will not play any high-profile game before they line out at Cape Coast Stadium.
As part of their build-up pogramme, the team lost 3-2 to a male club, Dominion Hotspur in a friendly, but they do not have any plan to play a top-grade build-up game.
In fact, the Falcons have not played a top match since June, when they defeated Gambia 7-0 over two legs in the 2018 AWCON qualifiers, but 30-year-old Chikwelu said there is no cause for alarm.
Chikwelu stressed: “We are preparing hard and not worried about playing top friendly games. I can assure you that will not affect us at the tournament.”
