Super Eagles-eligible midfielder, Chrisantus Uche has come under fire after his comments about La Liga referees and racial abuse sparked controversy.
In an interview with ESPN Africa, Uche lamented on the officiating in Spain and revealed his experiences with racial slurs on the pitch.
“In my first two or three La Liga games, I saw with my own eyes that the referees are very bad.”
“They hit me, and the referee just told me to get up. It’s a foul, and he has to blow the whistle. But when they hit another player, the referee blows immediately. It’s very painful.”
Chrisantus Uche also spoke candidly about the racial abuse he has faced, stating, “I’ve been called names, and the referees don’t intervene.”
The 21-year-old, who joined Getafe after stints at Moralo CP and AD Ceuta, quickly caught the attention of fans and media with his strong performances.
However, his remarks have drawn criticism from Getafe president Ángel Torres, who suggested a possible miscommunication in Uche’s interview.
“He has made a complete mistake. I will talk to him.”
”I don’t want to justify it, but someone who doesn’t speak Spanish, with a microphone in front of him, it seems to me that the journalist is more at fault.”
