Super Eagles hosted the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in the AFCON qualifiers Matchday 3 at Godswill Apkabio Stadium, Uyo on Saturday.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was the hero for Nigeria, scoring in the 86th minute to secure important 3 points in 1-0 win over a stubborn Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Lazio midfielder latched onto a cross from Moses Simon and fired the ball home, breaking the deadlock in a match that saw Libya employ ultra-defensive tactics throughout.
For much of the game, the Super Eagles struggled to penetrate Libya’s defensive wall, while the Libyans used time-wasting strategies in an attempt to frustrate the Nigerian side.
The tension was finally relieved when Dele-Bashiru’s late goal lifted Nigeria to victory.
This win celebrated Augustine Eguavoen’s 25th game in charge of the Super Eagles, and it improved his record to 15 wins, four draws, and six losses.
Interestingly, Eguavoen’s first match as Nigeria’s coach was also a 1-0 win over Libya back in 2005.
The Super Eagles’ victory keeps them firmly at the top of Group D table and in the race for qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
