Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers played a crucial role in Rangers’ 2-0 victory over St Johnstone in the Scottish League Cup round of 16 on Saturday, scoring a goal and providing an assist.
Despite several opportunities, Rangers struggled to find the net in the first half. However, Dessers, who was introduced at the start of the second half, made an immediate impact, breaking the deadlock in the 61st minute.
The Nigerian striker perfectly timed his run and was played through on goal by Rabbi Matondo, calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Joshua Rae.
The goal was initially disallowed due to a suspected foul in the build-up, but after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and the goal stood.
This marked Dessers’ third goal in his last four appearances for Rangers this season.
Later in the match, Dessers also assisted the second goal, setting up Ross McCausland to secure the win for ‘The Gers.’
Reflecting on his recent form, the 29-year-old striker said, “I know if I do my job, work hard for the team well and do what the manager asks me, then I know the goals will follow and that’s what’s happening now.”
On the VAR check, he added, “I had to be patient (during the VAR check), but it was a tough waiting moment, but I was happy.”
