USA ’94 World Cup star, Emmanuel Amuneke has taken another look at Nigeria’s implosion at Russia 2018 and reckoned that it was mostly because the Super Eagles lacked a creative playmaker in the middle of the pack.
Amuneke, who is working at this year’s World Cup as a member of the FFIA Technical Study Group, stressed that one of the assets Nigeria flaunted in years past was the presence of a creative midfielder in the team, but says such was missing in the squad Gernot Rohr lined out this year.
Though Amuneke further said there were positives for Nigeria to pick from Russia 2018, he still urged Rohr to inject creative players into the midfield ahead of their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles on September 7.
“There were lots of positives from the tournament on the part of the Super Eagles which they must build on just like the creative aspect and the attack.
“We have seen some lapses and must correct them and inject fresh ideas to compete well against other teams that set up their team to nullify our threats,” stated the 1994 African Footballer of The Year.
