Eagles to line up in 3-5-2 formation against South Africa

Date:

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be set out in a 3-5-2 formation against Group E rivals South Africa at the FNB Stadium today.

With Pool E table toppers in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) needing at least a point to seal their passage to the competition in Cameroon, coach Gernot Rohr has decided to have a cautious style for the game.

At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Nigeria recorded a 2-0 win over Iceland with the pattern and they will be hoping it works against high pressing Bafana Bafana on Saturday.

Despite his lack of game time for Enyimba, Ikechukwu Ezenwa has been given the nod to start in goal ahead of in-form duo Daniel Akpeyi and Theophilus Afelokhai.

The three-man defence comprises of “Oyinbo Wall” (Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong) and John Ogu.

Jamilu Collins and Kenneth Omeruo will operate as the wing backs.

Stoke City grafter Oghenekaro Etebo has been given the license to Police the rampaging South African attackers from wrecking havoc.

Alex Iwobi will continue as the attacking midfielder while Samuel Kalu will rove with twin strikers Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho upfront.
