Eagles Will Remain Top Of Group E – Akinwunmi

Date:

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) first vice-president, Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi has declared that the Super Eagles will remain top of their group in the Afirca Cup of Nations all the way till the last whistle in the race to Cameroon 2019, footballlive.ng gathered.

Akinwumi said he has was happy to see the Eagles go top of Group E for the first time, following a 3-2 win away to Libya, and added that the NFF will do everything to support the team in staying top all the way.
Akinwunmi, who is also chairman of Lagos State Football Association, spoke after the Eagles went top of Group E of the AFCON 2019 qualifying series for the first time after a hard fought win over Libya in Sfax.
Having not scored in 13 months, including pre-World Cup friendlies and at the finals in Russia, Odion Jude Ighalo added two to the hat –trick he netted in Uyo, for a total of five in three days.
Ighalo shot top of the AFCON 2019 goals scorers’ chart, in effectively abbreviating the Mediterranean Knights’ chances of earning a place in Cameroon next year.
Victory took Nigeria to nine points after four matches, one above South Africa, who drew 0-0 with Seychelles in Mahe Island earlier in the day, while Libya have four points and Seychelles only one.
Next up for the Eagles is a potentially explosive duel with Bafana Bafana in a top-of-the-table clash in Johannesburg on 17th November, ahead of which Akinwunmi said the Nigerian side will seek another away win.
Akinwunmi, who was Nigeria’s head of delegation to Sfax, added: “This is a very sweet victory. I am happy with the performance and the three points.
“Going top of the group for the first time in the campaign is a delight, and we intend to remain there”
