Ebi, Chikwelu, Ihezuo, Umotong’s Goals Sink Romania

Date:

A breathtaking performance by Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, buoyed by goals from alternate captains, Rita Chikwelu and Onome Ebi as well as Chiwendu Ihezuo and Ini Umotong fetched the side a 4-1 trouncing of Romania on Sunday.

Footballlive.ng reports that the Falcons romped in the encounter, which earned them bronze medals from the 2019 Wuhan Invitational Women’s Football Competition, thereby making up for a 3-0 loss to the hosts, China in their first match on Thursday.

Coach Thomas Dennnerby’s lasses went full throttle from the first blast of the referee’s whistle, in search of early goals, as they sought some line of consolation from their trip to The Oriental Nation.

The Falcons were the better side but found it difficult to break Romania’s defensive block, until a minute before half-time when Ihezuo opened the scoring, only for the Romanians to equalise nine minutes after the break.

Ebi then got on the score sheet to make it 2-1 after 63 minutes and her co-captain, Chikwelu struck on 68 minutes before Umotong, who plays for the female team of Brighton Hove Albion in England, scored to seal it 4-1.

The Falcons’ players will now head to their various bases, before another regrouping next month for a similar competition in Cyprus, where they will continue preparations for teh FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
