Edomwonyi Continues Nigerian Tradition At Wien

Date:

Austria Wien have maintained their tradition of signing Nigerian players by sealing a deal with former Rivers United of Port Harcourt attacker, Bright Edomwonyi, who previously starred for their league rivals, Sturm Graz.

Edomwonyi becomes the third Nigerian to star for the Vienna-based club, after their former top scorer, Olanrewaju Kayode and last season’s loan signing, Ibrahim Alhassan (Muazzam), who only joined Maritimo of Portugal on Thursday.

Barely hours after news emerged of Alhassan’s move to Maritimo, Wien quickly unveiled Edomwonyi, to set in motion their latest Nigerian connection in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Edomwonyi makes the move, after Alhassan joined Maritimo on a three year deal, after the expiration of his season long loan deal and the club announced the signing of the 23-year–old forward as his replacement.

Edomwonyi has previous experience of playing in Austria, as he starred for Sturm Graz from 2015 to 2017 before moving to Caykur Rizespor of Turkey, who were relegated at the end of his first season at the club.

He returned to Austria on loan to Grazern in January this year before his current transfer to where, two seasons ago, Kayode made his mark before leaving for Manchester City.

Before the start of last season and the club brought in Alhassan from Akwa United of Uyo on loan as Kayode’s replacement, but he too has now been replace d by Edomwonyi.

He said: “I’m glad that I’m here now, Austria Wien is a good club – that’s a good step for me. I want to help the team and will do my best to achieve our goals.

“The infrastructure is really great – with the new training pitches and the stadium – that’s really motivating. I already know some players from the current Austria team, I know the league very well, that’s an advantage. ”
