Enyimba’s assistant coach, Olanrewaju Yemi, has reiterated the team’s primary objective to defend their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title despite suffering a penalty shootout defeat to Abia Warriors in the Abia State Federation Cup final.
The defending NPFL champions faced a setback in the Abia State Federation Cup, losing on penalties to their rivals Abia Warriors. Despite the disappointment, Yemi praised his players for their performance in the final, especially considering the unfamiliar turf they played on.
Speaking to the club’s media, Yemi said, “It was a good game against Abia Warriors playing on this type of turf that we aren’t used to. I give kudos to the boys. I’m impressed with the boys as we dominated and we could have scored more goals.”
The assistant coach also highlighted the potential of the young players who featured in the state FA cup, emphasizing their ability to compete at the first-team level. “Our focus is on the NPFL, and the young players that featured in the state FA cup truly showed their qualities to compete in the first team,” he added.
With their sights set on retaining the NPFL title, Enyimba will now shift their attention to their upcoming league fixture against Kano Pillars on Wednesday.
