Manchester United have confirmed that Erik Ten Hag will continue as manager following a challenging 2023/2024 Premier League campaign.
The decision follows an end-of-season review led by Sir Dave Brailsford and the club’s new co-owners, INEOS.
The Dutch manager’s future had been in doubt due to United’s poor league performance, culminating in an eighth-place finish, their lowest ever in the Premier League.
Additionally, United exited the Champions League early, finishing bottom of their group.
However, United ended the season on a high note by winning the FA Cup against rivals Manchester City. This victory, along with a third-place finish and Carabao Cup win in his first season, played a significant role in the decision to retain Ten Hag.
A source revealed that the “clear conclusion” of the review was to keep Ten Hag. The club is set to discuss extending his contract, which currently runs until 2025, after “constructive discussions” about the review’s findings.
The 54 year-old coach earlier defended his performance, attributing poor results to injuries. He remained defiant about his future, stating after the FA Cup win: “If they [United’s owners] don’t want me, then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I do.”
Erik Ten Hag has been on holiday in Ibiza since the FA Cup victory. With confirmation of his job security, he is expected to return to Carrington for preseason training in July.
United will kick off their summer schedule with a match against Rosenborg in Norway on July 15.
