The race for spots in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has concluded, with Tanzania, Botswana, and Mozambique securing the final three spots after an intense final round of qualifiers.
The tournament will be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
The qualification process came to a thrilling conclusion in the recent international break, with multiple teams securing their spots in the tournament.
Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy, who had hoped to lead Guinea to qualification, will miss out after Guinea was defeated 1-0 by Tanzania.
This result allowed Tanzania to leapfrog Guinea into second place in Group H, ensuring their place in the competition for the fourth time in their history.
In another dramatic match, Mozambique edged out Guinea-Bissau with a 2-1 victory, securing the second-place finish in Group I and sealing their qualification.
Botswana, after a 12-year absence from the competition, made a strong return by finishing second in Group C with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, who had already qualified.
Meanwhile, some notable absences from the tournament include four-time champions Ghana, who failed to qualify for the first time since 2004, and Guinea, which narrowly missed out after Tanzania’s upset.
Sudan and Benin also booked their places with hard-fought draws, while Zambia, Mali, and Zimbabwe rounded out the list of teams that secured qualification.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will be a highly anticipated event, with Morocco as the host nation.
