Udinese-Fiorentina and Genoa-Cagliari have been called off after the death of Viola captain Davide Astori.
The news broke this morning that Italy defender Astori had died in his sleep.
He was in a hotel in Udine with the team, awaiting this morning’s game at the Dacia Arena.
Obviously, the Serie A match has been called off and his teammates are in shock.
Genoa-Cagliari was due to kick off at 11.30 GMT, but that too has been postponed after Cagliari and Genoa heard of the news.
The story broke in the stadium and a picture of Astori appeared on the screens at Marassi, greeted by a standing ovation from the entire arena.
Astori spent six years of his career at Cagliari, playing also for Milan, Roma and Fiorentina.
There are now reports that all today’s Serie A games will be called off as a sign of mourning.
