Former Green Eagles Goalkeeper, Peter Fregene, Passes Away

Date:

Legendary Nigerian goalkeeper Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, has passed away on Sunday, 13th of October, 2024.

Fregene, who represented Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, died on Sunday after battling a prolonged illness.

His death was confirmed by his close friend and former teammate, Segun Odegbami.

Fregene had been on life support for a week before his passing, surrounded by his devoted wife Tina and two of his children.

His death follows a public appeal for financial assistance made by Odegbami to support his medical care in Sapele, Delta State.

Despite some financial contributions from friends and well-wishers, Fregene’s condition deteriorated.

Odegbami thanked everyone who supported Peter Fregene during his illness and lamented the lack of a comprehensive welfare system for retired athletes in Nigeria.

“On behalf of all generations of Nigerian footballers, Olympians, sports persons, his family, friends, fans and a few incredible Nigerians that quietly rallied round and, with their support, prayers and the will of the Creator of the Universe, kept him alive until this night, I say a big ‘thank you’.

“Good night ‘Apo’. Rest my friend, rest in peace, finally! Dr. Olusegun Odegbami MON, OLY, AFNIIA, FNIS”
