Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka has shed light on his last-minute decision to join Bundesliga side FC Augsburg on loan from Brentford, a move that surprised many on the final day of the transfer window.
Onyeka, who had been with Brentford since the 2021/22 season, made 78 appearances, scoring once and providing four assists during his time with the Premier League club.
However, his future at Brentford took a sudden turn late in the summer transfer window.
In an exclusive interview with Brila Media, Onyeka explained that uncertainty about his role under Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, prompted his decision to seek consistent playing time elsewhere.
“I spoke to the coach and everyone at the club. I asked the coach about his plans for me, and he said I would play, but for me, I needed to start games consistently. That’s why I took the decision to move to Germany.”
Onyeka revealed that while Frank intended to rotate him in and out of the starting lineup, it was not enough to satisfy his desire for regular first-team football.
“He said he would start me in some games and mix it up, but I needed to be in the starting XI,” Onyeka added.
Since joining FC Augsburg, Frank Onyeka has already played in seven matches, contributing one assist as his new team currently sits 13th in the Bundesliga standings.
