Gernot Rohr needs to trust home based players. –Austin Eguavoen.

Former Super Eagles captain and Coach Austin Eguavoen has applauded current national team gaffer Gernot Rohr for a job well done with the national team ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Despite the commendation, Eguavoen believes that the coach can do better by looking inward and picking some of the talented players in the Nigeria Professional Football League to be part of the national team.

Unlike previous national team coaches, Gernot Rohr has failed to include home based players in the team especially failing to take any league player from the NPFL to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia which has not gone well with most lovers of the league who believe that some of the foreign based players that made the mundial are not as talented as the ones who weren’t given the opportunity.

Speaking with footballlive.ng The Tunisia 1994 winner insists that players who play in the league are good enough to play in the national team. “It is unfortunate that no player in the league has been able to breakthrough into the national team. It is not as if they are not good enough but I will still appeal to him to look inward a little bit, but generally I thing he has done a good job, we have a young team and I know things will go well for a very long time.”

The Franco-German coach has become a national football hero in Nigeria since taking over the job in 2016 qualifying the country for the World Cup and Russia in 2018 and also helping the team qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt after two failed attempts to qualify for the apex African national football tournament.
