Super Eagles Technical Adviser and interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has described his return to manage the Nigerian national team as an act of divine intervention, stating that he didn’t seek out the role but couldn’t refuse the call to serve his country.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Saturday’s 2025 African Nations Cup qualifier, Eguavoen, now in his fourth stint with the Super Eagles, shared his thoughts on his unexpected return to the helm.
“The position I occupied right now as Super Eagles Coach, I didn’t beg for it. It’s an intervention from God. It’s not possible for me to reject serving a country I love so much.
Nigerians love football, and anytime the opportunity to lead the Super Eagles comes, I think I should react positively to that. I am here today due to call from Nigeria and Nigerians.”
When asked if he felt any pressure ahead of the crucial match, Eguavoen remained calm, saying: “No, personally, I am not but there is pressure in the air that we must win tomorrow (Saturday).
Nigeria placed herself so high and the game against Benin Republic is nothing but winning. The mood in the camp is good, and we are coming out to win.”
The Super Eagles, runners-up in the 2023 AFCON, will take on Benin Republic today at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, with kick-off set for 5 p.m.
