Accrington Stanley of England defender, Michael Ihiekwe has committed his international future to Nigeria, despite rising pressure on him to stick with the country of his birth.
Born in Liverpool to a Nigerian father, footballlive.ng reports that the central defender is on loan from Rotherham United, where he was a shinning light in their promotion feat to the Championship last season.
Incidentally, Rotherham’s manager, Paul Warne picked Ihiekwe ahead of Super Eagles rookie, Semi Ajayi for a spot in central defense for seven of their last eight matches of the season.
While Ajayi was considered second string back then, Ihiekwe missed the playoff final versus Shrewsbury Town only after suffering an injury in the semi-final, which ruled the robust, pacy and dominant stopper out once.
The 25-year-old Ihiekwe, who has previously played for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Cheltenham Town and Tranmere Rovers, is in the first half of this season on loan at Accrington Stanley.
