Arsenal attacker, Alex Iwobi has missed out on winning The Gunners’ first goal of the month award for the current season, as the gong for August has been scooped by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, after both stars scored in the same 3-2 loss against Chelsea.
The 22-year-old Iwobi had been in the running for the award after finishing off an 18-pass move that involved 11 of the London club’s players except Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, to equalize in the 41st minute at Stamford Bridge.
However, Mkhitaryan’s low rifled shot which past the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga got the nod from fans, celebrating Arsenal’s first Premier League goal under their new coach, Unai Emery.
The Armenia skipper got the award with 61 percent of votes cast, with Iwobi in second place and Nacho Monreal’s equaliser against West Ham United places third.
Mkhitaryan’s strike against Chelsea has thus been named the most eye-catching goal scored by a Gunners player in August.
Nonetheless, Iwobi is still part of the record books, as his goal against The Blues saw him reach double-digits with goals, ten in total, since making his debut for North Londoners in 2015.
The Hale End Academy product has netted nine times in the English Premier League and once in Europe in a Champions League match against FC Basel in December 2016.
For this season, Iwobi has again been registered by Arsenal for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League and his name appears on their A list for the second-tier continental competition.
